You Shouldn't Have to Be a Building Expert to Get Your Home Fixed Right.

For over 30 years, Mattra has been the team Maine homeowners call when the last contractor's fix didn't hold — or when the problem feels bigger than any one trade can answer. We're the diagnosticians, the system thinkers, and the team that's willing to tell you what other contractors won't.

We Know What It's Like to Get Conflicting Advice and Not Know Who to Trust

You've already had someone in your home. Maybe more than one. They told you what they thought was wrong. They quoted a number. You did the work. The problem came back — same spot, or somewhere new — and now you're not sure if they were wrong, if you got taken advantage of, or if your home just has issues no one can really fix.

We hear this story constantly. It's the one we built Mattra to solve.

Most home problems aren't a mystery. They're a system that nobody read whole. The mold company looked at mold. The insulation company looked at insulation. The roofer looked at the roof. Each gave you the answer their trade is shaped to give. None of them were lying — but none of them were looking at the actual cause.

Mattra Started Because the Trades Don't Talk to Each Other

Over 30 years ago, our founder was working with property developers and home builders across Maine, managing entire job sites — excavation, framing, insulation, finish work, the whole sequence. From that vantage point, the same pattern showed up over and over: every trade did its own piece well, and somehow the finished home still failed.

Foundations drained badly. Air leaked where it shouldn't. Insulation went in around moisture problems nobody had checked for. Each trade walked away clean. The homeowner inherited the gaps between them.

That's where Mattra began — as a single team that managed all trades on a job site so the communication failures between them stopped costing homeowners their comfort, their energy bills, and their structures.

Over the years, that approach evolved. We brought in building science certifications. We saw — earlier than most — how moisture, air movement, insulation, and structural decay are one connected system, not four. We added remediation, weatherization, and consulting because the homes we were called into kept needing all of it together.

We're still the same kind of company we started as: one team that sees the whole picture, instead of a chain of subcontractors each holding one piece.

Diagnose Before You Prescribe

Most contractors quote before they understand. The pattern is so common that homeowners stop noticing it: someone walks the property, looks at the visible damage, and within minutes is telling you what the fix costs. The diagnosis step gets skipped because skipping it is faster, and faster wins more jobs.

We don't operate that way — and not because we're slower. Because anyone who quotes before diagnosing is guessing. And when contractors guess, homeowners pay for the guess.

A free expert inspection is how we begin every job. Our expert inspector walks the property, listens to what you've already been told, looks at the connections others missed, and explains what we're seeing — in plain language, before anyone talks about price. If the situation calls for deeper diagnostics like blower door testing or thermal imaging, we'll explain why and what that involves. If it doesn't, we won't sell you what you don't need.

This isn't a methodology we invented. It's the way every other diagnostic profession already works. Doctors don't write prescriptions before they run tests. We don't write quotes before we understand the home.

What Mattra Won't Do — No Matter What the Job Is Worth

Most companies tell you what they will do. We've found it more useful to tell you what we won't.

What It's Like to Have Mattra Look at Your Home

Our expert inspector arrives on time, in a marked truck, wearing the actual gear of a working contractor — not a sales uniform. They'll walk the property with you, ask what you've already been told, and look at the parts of your home most people never check: the basement, the attic, the rim joists, the soffits, the spots where two systems meet and where most problems start.

You'll get a verbal walkthrough on the spot. We'll explain what we're seeing, what we think it's connected to, and what your options are in order of priority. You'll probably learn more about how your home actually works than you expected to.

If you ask "is this serious," we'll tell you the truth — including when it isn't. If you ask "how much will this cost," we'll give you a real answer once we understand the scope. If we don't yet, we'll say so.

There's no high-pressure pitch at the end. We don't operate that way. You'll have what you need to make a decision on your own timeline. If you want to think about it, get other estimates, or do nothing for now — that's fine. We've earned long-term customers by being the company that didn't push, and the company they came back to.

A note on warmth: we tend to overexplain. Our team will teach you more about building science than you probably need to know. We'd rather you learn too much than be left guessing.

FAQs

Over 30 years. Mattra has been serving Maine homeowners continuously since 1996. Our experience with Maine's climate, housing stock, and building performance challenges is one of our strongest differentiators.

Mattra is BPI Certified for building science, IICRC Certified for remediation, and a registered Efficiency Maine vendor. We're also general contractors with over 30 years of experience across mold remediation, insulation, weatherization, and full-scope construction.

We don't quote a price until we understand what's actually wrong. A free expert inspection comes first — we walk the property, look at how the systems in your home connect, and explain what we're seeing in plain language. The diagnosis tells us what fix the home needs, not what trade we want to sell.

Yes. We're set up to handle the full path under one team — diagnosis, remediation, insulation and air sealing, weatherization, and full construction work when the project requires it. Most of our customers get diagnosis and execution from the same crew. No handoffs, no finger-pointing.

Mold and moisture, insulation and air sealing, ventilation, structural repair and rebuild, weatherization, and home consulting when you're not sure which service you need. We work across the trades because the problems we see usually cross them.

You Shouldn't Have to Become an Expert to Trust the People Working on Your Home.

You should be able to call someone, get a real answer, understand the situation in plain language, and have it fixed in a way that holds. That's the kind of homeowner you become with Mattra in your corner — not because we make you smarter about your home, but because we tell you the truth about it. The problem stops returning. The conversations stop being stressful. The home stops being something you worry about.

That's what we're here for.

You don't need to have it figured out before you reach out.
